If you have lived in Madras for more than a summer, you already know August is not a random string of things to do. It is a rhythm. First Thursday leads into the Saturday Market weekend, mid-month settles into movie nights and gallery openings, and the whole month builds toward the Airshow. The point of this post is simple: if you plan around that rhythm instead of the individual flyers taped to the door at Coopers, you get a better month with less driving.
Here is how the beats line up this year, and where to eat between them.
The First Thursday anchor
August opens on Thursday, August 6 with First Thursday, Hot Summer Nights and Sip & Shop from 5 to 8 p.m. downtown, featuring vendors, food, music, a costume contest, and shopping along Fifth Street. The Madras Downtown Association has been running this as a first-Thursday series through the summer, and the August installment is the loudest one because it doubles as the season's costume night. This year's theme leans 70s, bell bottoms and disco balls, with live bands, vendors, and a funky costume contest to close out the summer with some serious soul.
The same evening carries two gallery openings that are worth building into the walk. Art Adventure Gallery hosts an opening reception from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 6 for Tananawit Warm Springs Artists, and River Ridge Gallery runs 5 to 7 p.m. the same night, featuring Vincenzo Barraco wildlife photography. If you have out-of-town family visiting, this is the one Thursday of the month that actually shows off the downtown as a downtown, not a stretch of Fourth Street between errands.
A practical note on Eagle Bakery, which people always ask about when planning a First Thursday route: the bakery, based in a converted house on the western edge of downtown, is only open Fridays and Saturdays. So plan the maple cinnamon roll for the morning after, not the walk itself.
Saturdays at Sahalee
The weekend after First Thursday is the busiest Saturday of the month at Sahalee Park.
Madras Saturday Market runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday through Sept. 5 at Sahalee Park, with artisan items, baked goods, handmade products, and food. That in itself is not news to anyone who lives here. What is worth flagging is that August 8 stacks two events in the same park on the same day. 2026 National Night Out starts at 3 p.m. Aug. 8 at Sahalee Park, with local first responders, food, face painting, water balloon fights, a dunk tank, and prizes.
If you have kids, that is a full Saturday inside one park with no repositioning. If you do not, it is the one Saturday of the month where you can park once, do the market at opening, cross the street for lunch, and come back for the community event without ever moving the car. The rest of the August Saturdays are quieter market-only mornings, which is the version most people prefer anyway.
Weeknights: movies in the park, then galleries again
Mid-month is when Madras slows down and gets weird in a good way.
Madras Munchies and Movies runs at 6 p.m., with Aug. 13 featuring JC Little League and "The Sandlot," and Aug. 20 with Madras Elks and "Back to the Future," where you can sit in Marty's DeLorean. The DeLorean is not a joke. It shows up, and people take pictures with it, and if you have a kid under ten they will remember it longer than any organized event this summer.

Two events in the second week are technically not in Madras but function as Madras events because everyone drives to them.
Free Snowcones in the Park runs 12 to 2 p.m. on Aug. 7 at Culver Park, sponsored by Culver Community Improvement Group. Fifteen minutes south, free, and it is the kind of thing you go to once and then tell every parent you know about the following year.
The Metolius Luau Party is at 4 p.m. on Aug. 9 at Metolius City Park, with live music, hula dancers, and Hawaiian barbecue, limited tickets at $20 per person, purchased at Metolius City Hall. The ticket cap is the thing to know. This is not a walk-up event, and every year somebody drives out expecting to buy at the gate. Buy the tickets at City Hall the week before or skip it.
If you have a middle-schooler with any interest in football, the same weekend has a local camp on the calendar. Youth Football Camp runs Aug. 11 to 13 on the Madras High School football field for grades 3 to 8, with registration Aug. 11 from 1:30 to 2 p.m. and camp from 2 to 3:30 p.m., $50 per athlete.
The Airshow is the point of the month
Every other August event is essentially a warm-up.
The Airshow of the Cascades Festival begins Thursday, Aug. 27, 2026 at 4 p.m. at Madras Municipal Airport, and the festival guide lists it as the Bright Wood Airshow of the Cascades running Aug. 21 through 22 in Madras. The dates on the festival guide reflect the historical weekend, so cross-check the airport listing before you book anyone's flight in from Portland. Either way, this is the one weekend of the year Madras genuinely doubles in population, and it is the reason downtown parking behaves the way it does the last week of August.
If you are hosting people who have never been, the pattern that works is Friday night at the airshow's fly-in movie, Saturday afternoon at the flight demonstrations, and Saturday night for the pyrotechnics. Sunday is for recovering at Great Earth or Coopers and pretending you have to work.
Where people actually eat between events
The downtown food math in Madras is not complicated once you separate the coffee-and-pastry stops from the sit-down places from the food trucks.
For morning and afternoon fuel between First Thursday errands, Coopers Coffee Co. serves light breakfast dishes, muffins, and pastries, and is a local hotspot for creative coffee, with a rotating cast of seasonally inspired drinks alongside the usual menu. Great Earth Café & Market delivers plenty of satisfying options in downtown Madras, open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily, with a vegetarian-friendly menu that includes breakfast burritos, smoothies, soups, sandwiches, and salads. Eagle Bakery, as noted, is a Friday-Saturday-only stop, and if you have never had the hulking cinnamon rolls topped with sweet maple frosting, that is the one to try before you try anything else on the menu.
For dinner near the event calendar:
- The Spot Tap Room, Restaurant and Event Center on the north side of town, with local craft beer, wines, and mixed drinks alongside food from on-site cuisine trucks or the in-restaurant kitchen, and seating around firepits, inside, or on the deck. The John Brown Event Center attached to it is named for John A. Brown, one of the first African American homesteaders to settle in Jefferson County, Oregon, which is a piece of local history most residents do not actually know.
- Initiative Brewing downtown, which has earned acclaim for creative takes on classic styles, including a lager made with honey and an imperial red ale with earthy notes for a balanced finish.
- Whiskey Pie Pizza at New Basin Distilling Company on the north edge of town, where the food truck slings wood-fired pies with rotating toppings including macaroni and cheese, meatballs with fresh basil, chicken with sweet Thai sauce, or chicken nuggets and waffle pieces, alongside wood-fired nachos and tostadas, paired with New Basin's locally distilled spirits.
For the classic sit-down, Black Bear Diner's menu covers burgers, sandwiches, salads, and a meat-forward dinner slate of steaks, meatloaf, pot roast, and slow-roasted prime rib on Fridays and Saturdays. It is the least surprising recommendation in Madras and the most reliable one if you have four generations at the table.
The through-line
There is one thing this calendar tells you about Madras that the aggregator sites will not. This is a town whose social life is organized by a working-class farming community of about 7,800, and the entire month of August is essentially one long series of ways to run into the same neighbors in different parks. First Thursday, Saturday Market, National Night Out, the movie in the park, the Airshow. Different venues, largely the same crowd. That is the reason living here works, and it is the reason most of the people who move here from Bend or Redmond either love it in six months or leave in twelve.
